YELLOW BIRD

The Yellow Bird cocktail cocktail is believed to have originated in the Caribbean during the mid 20th century, with Jamaica most often cited as its birthplace. Although the exact creator remains uncertain, the drink became associated with the tropical cocktail movement that flourished after World War II, when rum based drinks gained international attention through tourism and tiki culture. Its name is commonly linked to the 1899 Haitian song “Yellow Bird” (“Choucoune”), which became internationally popular in the 1950s and helped inspire the cocktail’s exotic identity. By the 1960s, the Yellow Bird had appeared in bartending guides and was recognised as a bright, citrus forward Caribbean classic served in resorts and hotel bars across the West Indies.

The Yellow Bird is traditionally made with light rum, Galliano liqueur, triple sec or curaçao, and fresh lime juice, creating a balance of sweet herbal notes and sharp citrus flavour. Some variations also include dark rum or orange juice, depending on regional recipes. The cocktail became widely popular during the 1960s and 1970s as tropical drinks spread throughout North America and Europe alongside the rise of tiki bars, beach resorts, and Caribbean tourism. Its colourful presentation and approachable flavour profile made it a favourite vacation cocktail, and it was eventually recognised by the International Bartenders Association as an official cocktail, helping preserve its status as a modern tropical classic.
