UP TO DATE
The Up to Date cocktail traces its origins to the late 19th century, first surfacing in American bartending circles as part of the elegant, spirit forward repertoire that defined the pre Prohibition era. Its exact birthplace is a bit fuzzy, some credit New York saloons while others point to Midwestern hotel bars, but what’s clear is the Up To Date emerged from the same inventive spirit that produced classics like the Manhattan and the Martini. The drink’s name, delightfully literal and a little cheeky, suggests a cocktail that was modern for its time. A balanced concoction meant to showcase the finer qualities of whiskey and mixers without fuss. Over decades the Up to Date drifted in and out of bartending manuals, enjoyed by those who appreciated a dry, bitters accented tipple that leaned toward refinement rather than flash.
The classic Up to Date typically combines equal parts amontillado sherry and rye whiskey with a grand manier (a French orange flavoured liqueur made by blending cognac with distilled bitter orange essence and sugar) for subtle sweetness, and a few dashes of aromatic bitters. Garnishes are minimal, with a lemon swath or twist to keep the focus on the spirit blend. The cocktail enjoyed renewed popularity during modern cocktail revival movements from the 1990s onward, when craft bartenders and mixologists began mining forgotten recipes from vintage guides and speakeasy era books. Its resurgence was fuelled by a broader appreciation for low sugar, spirit forward drinks and the trend toward classic techniques stirring, chilling and serving straight, making the Up to Date a tidy, stylish choice in contemporary bars and home cocktail cabinets.
