Hobart

Hobart, the capital city of Tasmania, is known for its stunning natural landscapes, rich history, and vibrant cultural scene. Nestled between the imposing Mount Wellington and the Derwent River.

The city's heritage is reflected in its well-preserved architecture, particularly in areas like Salamanca Place, where the historic warehouses have been transformed into bustling cafes, galleries, and markets. The Salamanca Market, held every Saturday, showcases local artisans, fresh produce, and delicious food.

Hobart's culinary scene is noteworthy, characterised by its focus on fresh, local ingredients. The city boasts a growing number of restaurants and eateries that emphasise seasonal produce, seafood, and Tasmanian wines.

The iconic MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) is another major attraction, known for its provocative exhibits and immersive experiences that challenge traditional perceptions of art.

Fast Tips

  • 2017 - Stayed W/ Mates (4 nights)

    2019 - Stayed in Hostel (3 nights)

2023 - Stayed at Tasman Hotel (1 nights)

2024 - Stayed at The Braithwaite (3 nights)

  • Public transport really isn't Hobarts vibe, so I recommend hiring a car or using uber to get around. Ubers were pretty reliable whilst we visited but you can get stuck if you go too far out from the main town, so be prepared.

  • There is so many great spots to eat but just be wary because a lot of them aren’t open all week, so if you’re there over Monday - Wednesday, you might have to do a bit more research.

  • As a queer male I felt completely safe here. Hobart seemed to be quite relaxed and open to all, and LGBTQ+ friendly as well.

  • For just Hobart I think 3-4 nights is perfect, you can tick everything off whilst also venturing out for a day and fit in MONA.

  • Accomodation is varied but there are some really great options. I highly recommend The Braithwaite in Sandy Bay. It’s absolutely stunning, but there are also a lot of hotel and Airbnb options to your budget.

Eats & Sips

TEMPLO

A tiny 25 seater restaurant in the heart of Hobart that for a long time was my favourite meal I have ever had. Only a set menu available and thank god, because they know what they’re doing. Book way in advance to get a spot and become okay with sitting on a shared table.

MARIA

Aløft’s sister restaurant is one level below, and the focus is a more casual and an ode to everything Mediterranean. Nothing is lost when it comes to the hospitality and service, it’s all just a tad more playful. The food is Greek leaning, with classic combinations being reimagined.

PIGEON WHOLE BAKERS

Hobart’s best bakery. Hands down. Situated centrally, this tiny spot knocks out some of the best bread which you can hit up in their daily sandwiches. Coffee is taken seriously as well and did not disappoint. But do not leave without grabbing a morning bun.

MARY MARY

No every trip needs a late night cocktail bar option and my pick is Mary Mary. So cosy with underground den vibes, you’ll want a rob roy the moment you walk in. The cocktail menu is considerate and highlights a wonderful array of Tasmanian ingredients.

VILLINO COFFEE ROASTERS

If you’re looking for a wonderful coffee and to pick up some high quality roasted beans to be freshly ground for back home, look no further. The spot is as cosy as can be, features pastries, but the star is the coffee.

ALØFT

On the top floor of the Brooke St Pier, this restaurant overlooks the waterfront, but you’ll forget about it because everything that is great with hospitality happens inside the four walls. A chefs menu (curated by the brilliant Christian Ryan) that is fine dining at its best. If you’re going to spend the money get yourself here.

TROPHY ROOM

Refined modern Australian food plates with a real focus on local ingredients meaning the menu is constantly changing depending on the season.

SISTERHOOD

A small walk towards out of the city centre, is this solid, hits all the points Aus cafe in Sandy Bay. As we stayed in Sandy Bay it was a great morning coffee and breakfast spot with all the classics. Sunny and bright aesthetic means its great for all weather.

INSTITUT POLAIRE

The coolest (literally) wine bar in Hobart. Snowy white interiors and super chilled drinks, this spot is a the perfect before dinner cocktail hit up. Best part are the food is just as wonderful, so definitely add on a snack or two.

WESTSIDE LAUNDRY

During the day this reformed laundry, hits you with a menu of sandwiches that is banger after banger. By night time, it’s a bistro that serves up mini martinis and diner fare. Always delcious, always welcoming and perfect for a classic grey day in Hobart.

AGRARIAN KITCHEN

Is it a cooking school, a farm, a restaurant? it’s all that plus more. From farm to table, but done on a level I have never seen before, the love and respect for ingredients here is on another level. Yes it’s a 30 minute drive, but its worth it. A trip to Hobart and not visiting just wouldn’t make sense.

ROSIE IN MY MIDNIGHT DREAMS

Such a great approachable cafe at the front of the Brooke St Pier. The food is eclectic and cool, great coffee and a solid offering for wines if you’re feeling it. Pro tip is to head there for breakfast right before jumping on your ferry to MONA (ferry leaves from the same building).

SONNY

They do food and drinks. But my oh my, do they do it well. Yes it’s tiny and walk in only, but when something is this good, you can do whatever you like. Get there early to get a spot and its really a perfect wine and snack spot before dinner somewhere.

MANKY SALLY’S

A Moo Brew Taphouse along the water, is my choice of spots if you want something easy without going too far. Casual and welcoming, the beer selection is fast and you can’t really go wrong. Also the interior is worth a look, they call it luxury dive bar and I reckon the nailed it.
