Bali
Bali is an Indonesian island renowned for its stunning landscapes, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality. It is part of the Lesser Sunda Islands and is situated in the westernmost end of the Lesser Sunda chain, lying between Java to the west and Lombok to the east.
The island is famous for its diverse geography, which includes sandy beaches, terraced rice paddies, volcanic mountains, and lush tropical forests. Kuta Beach is one of the most popular destinations, known for its surf-friendly waves and lively nightlife. Ubud, in contrast, offers a more tranquil atmosphere with art galleries, traditional markets, and wellness retreats.
Bali is also rich in cultural heritage, evident through its numerous temples, ceremonies, and festivals. The island's predominant religion is Balinese Hinduism, which blends local traditions with Hindu influences. Key religious sites include Uluwatu Temple, perched on a cliff overlooking the ocean, and the iconic Tanah Lot Temple, known for its picturesque seaside setting.

Get ready to grab a car and enjoy some traffic. Depending where you are, give yourself time to get anywhere. I recommend downloading the 'GRAB' and 'MY BLUE BIRD' and using them as taxis around the island.
Usually you can organise pick up from the airport with the hotel you are with. We also have a lovely driver who we use for a whole day named Patek, who's number is 085 739 241 676 and we highly recommend hitting him for your trip.

Getting into Bali has a little bit of paperwork so make sure you check out all the correct visas you need before you enter. We also had a new monkeypox based one when we went in, so check up to date news from your government website for when you head.

As a queer male I felt completely safe here in Bali. Now more to consider if you are heading into Indonesia for queer people, but Bali itself has the friendliest people there. I would recommend reading up Indonesian laws to make sure you are on top of the more conservative laws.

I like a week in Bali. There is a lot to do and it really is a great place to relax and read through a book. Nothing less than 4 nights though.

if you're looking for relaxation and zen vibes Ubud is your spot. More older crowd with some incredible food spots.
If you're looking for a party, beaches and a lot going on all the time, head to Canggu. Incredible places to eat, but its like a mini Melbourne.
If you're looking for resorts and to do absolutely nothing, Uluwatu and Nusa Dua are great. Not far from the airport and very secluded from the mayhem.
Avoid Kuta and even Seminyak now. I have stayed in Seminyak but it seems to have become a little bit more hectic and full on.
-
Do not drink tap water. Bottled water only. You should be absolutely fine to have ice and reputable places. All the spots I provide below we were absolutely fine stomach wise.

Waterbom (Water based theme park)
Uluwatu Beaches
Batur Natural Hot Springs
A Coffee Plantation
Waterfalls
Rice Fields

I recommend a split of cash and card. Usually cash is preferred or only accepted, but you can always access an ATM in the main spots.
Eats & Sips
SKOOL KITCHEN - CHANGGU
Nestled in the vibrant heart of Changgu, Skool Kitchen opens its doors to food enthusiasts eager to experience the authentic tastes of Indonesian cuisine. The kitchen embraces a blend of traditional recipes and contemporary cooking techniques, with lots of dishes cooked over fire.
LUCKY FISH LOUNGE - ULUWATU
This is a kindof only in Bali experiences. Seafood on the beach in a nutshell. Gorgeous sunset, as you head to the fishmonger, choose how much seafood you want and it gets BBQ’d and brought over with rice & condiments. Prep for a little walk down the mountain to the beach.
BABI GULING PANDE EGI - UBUD
A wonderful out of the way warung serving traditional roast suckling pig. Babi Gulang is legit so delicious and this place, despite being a tad out of town, is totally worth the taxi. Calming views and super cheap pork.
RUSTERS - UBUD
What a gorgeous spot for sunset? Cocktails and some jazz going Wednesday and Friday night. Also got there just in time for cocktail happy hour b/w 4-6pm. This is more bar and drinks, but you can also definitely eat here and grab some snacks.
RIUNG RASA - ULUWATU
This hidden gem is a spot they I am so happy I stumbled across. Think Indonesian Backyard BBQ, in an outdoor chill setting. But the best part it’s just good old school BBQ with an array of sides to compliment them all. Hidden in Garden 77 Food Court.
RAJA BALI REST. - NUSA DUA
Another easy and no frills restaurant in Nuda Dua. The food was really really good. You can get all of your classics and its a great option opposed to the overpriced hotel restaurants in the area.
NUSANTARA - UBUD
One of the best meals I’ve ever had. Each dish taking influence from regional Indonesian food. The service, the fit out and especially the food, was 10/10.
CLUB SODA - CHANGGU
Club Soda is all cocktails and vibes. Records playing in the background and super cool decor, this place should be hit up after any dinner you have in the area. Asian and Japanese small plates with Indonesian ingredients are a must to snack on.
WARUNG SARI BOGA - NUSA DUA
This is the epitome of cheap and cheerful. Local warung to our hotel in nusa dua, the food is just good. No frills, just easy, delicious, and perfect for those staying in Nusa Dua and needing something quick and easy nearby.
SUKA ESPRESSO - UBUD
Lush cafe/brunch spot. Think Aussie style but done in a very Balinese way. Sando was amazing and pretty good price. Great for if you’re feeling like a guaranteed good coffee.
WARUNG GARASI - UBUD
Down a laneway in Ubud town, think cheap and approachable. Very hole in the wall vibe, but just a great options amongst the fancy overpriced spots in the area. They do close early at night so get in and enjoy some great Indonesian food.
